December may be chilly in Gettysburg, but the spirit of the season will warm you from the inside.
Pick your weekend and head to Gettysburg to celebrate the holidays this December. Small town traditions are big in Gettysburg, complete with the town Christmas tree and Santa’s Shanty on Lincoln Square and the annual Gettysburg Christmas Festival. Also add to your holiday bucket list a viewing of “A Christmas Carol” produced by the Totem Pole Playhouse at the Majestic Theater.
Take a tour of the Shriver House Museum decorated for the holidays, 1860s style. Enter the home and see the small tree set in the parlor where the family would entertain. Throughout the home you will discover other pieces that take you back to a simpler time. Your guide will tell you the story of the Shrivers and their holidays.
If you visit the second weekend of December, you will discover a twenty–year tradition at the annual Tuba Carol Festival on Lincoln Square. Young and old tuba players gather to play holiday classics while visitors enjoy hot cocoa and sing along to get into the spirit of the season. Or take in the annual Holiday House Tour hosted by the Inns of the Gettysburg Area. A variety of historic homes, inns and properties open their doors to showcase their holiday décor.
During your free time, shop for the perfect gift for friends and family. You can spend an entire weekend wandering in and out of the boutique shops and galleries in downtown Gettysburg. Whether you are looking for a Civil War artifact or a locally made piece of art of jewelry, you will not be disappointed.
