We don’t want you to stress about finances on your Gettysburg vacation. Check out this budget friendly itinerary!
When you arrive Friday evening, begin your visit where President Lincoln was greeted upon his arrival to Gettysburg – at the Gettysburg Lincoln Railroad Station. Learn about the effect the Civil War had on citizens of Gettysburg, and how they pulled together to build the town back up after the Battle of Gettysburg. This museum is free and great for all ages!
Getting hungry? You’ll find many affordable places to eat like Tommy’s Pizza or Gettysburg Eddie’s right in town. When you’re ready to call it a night, consider staying at one of our Gettysburg campgrounds, or check out our other affordable accommodations if camping isn’t for you. We have plenty of options within your budget!
Start your morning at Gettysburg National Military Park to get some perspective on the events that unfolded in Gettysburg in July of 1863. Admission to the park is free. Either opt for a self-guided journey or purchase an affordable CD to guide you on an audio tour of the battlefield.
Next, head to one of our free museums. At the Gettysburg Museum of History you’ll find a collection of artifacts from the Civil War and other historical eras. Learn about the civilians who lived through the Battle of Gettysburg at The Rupp House.
Still can’t get enough of Gettysburg’s amazing history? Head to Soldiers’ National Cemetery where President Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address and to visit the gravesites of the valiant soldiers’ who lost their lives in the battle. There is no admission fee to enter the cemetery.
Or maybe you’re itching to stretch your legs and hit the local trails. Head to Strawberry Hill Nature Preserve in nearby Fairfield, Pa. Strawberry Hill is a 600-acre preserve with diverse habitats and many scenic spots visible from their six unique hiking trails. If you’re here with the kids, bring them by the free Nature Classroom to learn more about the plant and animal life found on the preserve, and to see a few animals up close!
Spend your evening around the campfire at your campsite roasting marshmallows and telling your favorite Gettysburg ghost stories.
You’ve already dove into Gettysburg’s history, now it’s time to explore the countryside in and around the historical town. Immerse yourself in the orchards, vineyards and rolling hillsides of Adams County.
As you’re traveling along the trail, make a few stops and detours – like a visit to Mr. Ed’s Elephant Museum & Candy Emporium in Orrtanna, Pa. This free museum features over 12,000 elephants, homemade fudge and roasted peanuts! Check out this oddity and grab a treat for the road.
Be sure to stop at the Historic Round Barn & Farm Market, also in Orrtanna. This round barn is one of only a few still standing today and inside you’ll find fresh local fruits and vegetables, jams and spreads, gift items and more. Pick up a few items and pack a picnic to enjoy as you complete some stops along the Adams County Pour Tour. Grab your free passport at any participating location and earn prizes as you collect stamps for trying the flavorful craft beverages along the trail.
