The warmth and charm of small-town Gettysburg is never more alive than it is during the holiday season. This two-day plan will fill you with that feel-good holiday cheer!
One of the best parts of the holidays are all the yummy foods that go with the season. The Christmas Tastes & Traditions Walking Food Tour allows you to sample some of Gettysburg’s most popular dishes while taking in the holiday decorations in the historic town.
Once your belly is full, head to Soldiers’ National Cemetery. During the month of December and into mid-January, sixteen hundred holiday wreaths are placed on the graves for Sergeant Mac Foundation’s National Wreath Project.
Take a short drive to New Freedom, Pennsylvania for a holiday train ride with Northern Central Railway–Steam Into History. Then head back to Gettysburg for dinner and catch a holiday performance or concert at one of our local theaters or churches.
Stay downtown, or check out one of our bed and breakfasts for your cozy winter retreat. Many have amazing breakfasts to look forward to in the morning.
After breakfast, explore the Gettysburg area’s shopping scene. Are you into antiquing? Head to nearby New Oxford, Pa. for your primitives and antiques. Or head to Lincoln Square where you’ll find unique boutiques and shops with handmade gifts and one-of-a-kind artifacts. This year, your Christmas gifts can be personalized treasures carefully chosen for the ones you love. Also in Downtown Gettysburg, you’ll find plenty of dining options. Whether you prefer café style, upscale restaurants or pubs – you’ll find it downtown!
After lunch, head to Gettysburg National Military Park Museum & Visitor Center for your tickets to see An Eisenhower Christmas at Eisenhower National Historic Site. Every year, the former retirement home of President Eisenhower is decorated just as his wife Mamie would have done it – complete with a Christmas tree, poinsettias and mistletoe among other holiday decorations.
To end your stay, we encourage you to enjoy a Christmas feast at one of Gettysburg’s historic restaurants before heading back home for the holidays.
