Gettysburg named among ‘Most Romantic’ small towns in PA

Civil War town offers historic charm in timeless setting

01/16/24

There’s a little town in Pennsylvania that is steeped in history and rich in romance.

Gettysburg, recently named the most romantic small town in the Keystone State by New York Travel Guides, exudes the charm that can only be found in a place that values preserving the past while celebrating the best of the present.

Out of 600 American small towns, New York Travel Guides selected 140 as the most romantic, with Gettysburg coming out as the top Pennsylvania town in 2023. Travel experts considered factors including romantic places to stay, activities, cozy places to eat, and historic architecture and scenery, according to the study.

In the same year, U.S. News & World Report claimed Gettysburg as one of the Top 20 most romantic getaways in Pennsylvania.

“Even if you and your sweetheart don’t consider yourselves history buffs, you’ll find plenty of other reasons to visit Gettysburg. An array of cozy restaurants, boutique shops and historic B&Bs make Gettysburg one of the most romantic getaways in Pennsylvania,” the article reads.

Couples visiting this historic town will find themselves indulging in exquisite dining experiences as they spend the day strolling through mom-and-pop shops eager to spoil them with unique gifts. Restaurants provide a range of culinary experiences, from dining by candlelight in a 250-year-old tavern to savoring a mouthwatering burger in a laid-back pub.

Locally made beer, cider, mead, wine and spirits are the stars of the Adams County Pour Tour. As visitors make their way across this craft beverage trail, they will find themselves sipping to the sounds of live music and lively atmospheres. Those who take home an extra bottle will be reminded of their Gettysburg memories every time they pour a glass.

Look to the battlefield to discover the natural beauty that has captivated millions of visitors for more than 160 years. Climb to the top of the Pennsylvania State Memorial to watch the sunrise paint the sky in watercolor hues or watch the moonlight sparkle on the creek by Sachs Covered Bridge. Lovebirds can end the day snuggled up in B&Bs, inns and hotels conveniently located downtown or opt for a more secluded stay in the countryside.

The stories of those whose love was tested by the Civil War are told at museums throughout Gettysburg. Add a special touch by booking a private battlefield tour of Gettysburg National Military Park. Guides customize the storytelling experience and are happy to snap photos of loved ones at landmarks.

To celebrate the season of love, Destination Gettysburg, in partnership with Community Media and Main Street Gettysburg, will hold a vow renewal event, Gettysburg Loves Love. Married couples are invited to renew their commitment to one another Feb. 17 in a ceremony officiated by Gettysburg Mayor Rita Frealing on Lincoln Square. Destination Gettysburg will provide additional details in the coming weeks.
