Everybody hopes for sunshine and clear skies on their vacation, but sometimes the weather has other plans. Don’t worry – in Gettysburg, there’s still plenty to keep you busy if it rains!
You’re here in Gettysburg, and one thing you know for sure is that you want to tour the battlefield. Don’t let a little rain deter you! You can stay dry and still tour the battlegrounds by bus, horse-drawn carriage or in the comfort of your own car. We also recommend touring Eisenhower National Historic Site – President Eisenhower’s Gettysburg retirement home.
You’ve finished up your tour and the rain hasn’t let up? Check out some of our local art galleries or have some hands-on fun and create your own masterpiece at Under the Horizon or the Adams County Arts Council. We have something for all ages and experience levels.
Don’t get discouraged if it’s still downpouring. Instead, get poured on the Adams County Pour Tour! Taste your way through the county with craft wine, cider, beer and spirits. Pick up a free passport at any participating location and collect prizes as you taste your way through the trail. Many stops also have delicious food if you’re getting hungry.
Or perhaps the paranormal intrigues you. End your evening with a ghost tour or paranormal investigation.
Stay indoors and deepen your understanding on Gettysburg history at our educational museums. If you’re looking for something other than Civil War history, you can learn about a variety of other topics including racecars, trains, apples and the history of firefighting.
You can also head to The Outlet Shoppes at Gettysburg for some fun when it rains. Shopping usually works up an appetite, so next, we recommend diving into Gettysburg’s foodie scene. From Irish to Italian fare, there’s something for everyone. And you can top it all of with a sweet treat from a local ice cream shop or bakery.
End your evening by taking in a theatrical production at the Majestic Theater. If you prefer to be in on the action, you can also test your wits at an escape room.
For some, the sound of rain is relaxing. Relax further with a spa treatment or with a yoga class at Down Dog Gettysburg. Depending on which way home is for you, you can tack on some more indoor fun in nearby Hanover with the Utz Quality Foods Factory Tour or a stop at The Markets at Hanover. Or take a detour to Carlisle Sports Emporium – a one stop shop for go-karts (there is an indoor course), arcade games, batting cages, virtual reality and more!
