Gettysburg and the 250th: The Place That Shaped a Nation

Where America Was Tested… and Long Endures

As America approaches 250 years of independence, Gettysburg and Adams County stand as powerful symbols of the nation’s story.

Four score and seven years after the country’s founding, Civil War soldiers fought for the soul of the nation in the Battle of Gettysburg. That 1863 battle, and President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address that followed, would forever change the course of history.

From tragedy of the Civil War to the vibrant community of today, history has made clear that the story of America cannot be told without Gettysburg. As the nation commemorates the Semiquincentennial, Gettysburg invites all to reflect on the past, honor those who shaped it and carry their legacy into the future.

Gettysburg Is Part of a Larger Story

While Gettysburg holds a special place in America’s story, it is also part of a nationwide movement to honor 250 years of independence, innovation, and resilience. Together with partners across Pennsylvania and the United States, we’re celebrating the shared history that connects us and the future we’re building together.
