Civilians of Gettysburg: Battle in Our Backyard

(all Girl Scout levels recommended)

Learn about the impact of the Battle of Gettysburg on the families who lived through it. Your day includes a historic house tour, interactive museum and visit to a fruit farm where you can learn about one of the top industries in the county! Perfect for all Girl Scout levels!

This package includes:

Jennie Wade House (Guided tour) Jennie was the only civilian to perish during the three days of the Battle. Learn about her family’s struggles and fight for survival during those harrowing days as you explore the house that she fled to for safety.

Gettysburg Heritage Center: A visual and interactive experience! Learn about the Battle of Gettysburg from two perspectives – the civilians who called Gettysburg home, and the soldiers who fought. Take a step back in time to the town of Gettysburg, and find out what the civilians experienced before, during and after the battle. Utilizing various historical documents, artifacts, interactive displays and 3-D photography, discover ordinary people who did extraordinary things. You will also see the orientation movie, “Gettysburg: An Animated Map,” a 20-minute presentation that orients visitors to the battle.

Hollabaugh Bros. Fruit Farm & Market: Family-owned farm celebrating more than 70 years of business in Adams County, PA. Enjoy a wagon ride around the farm, learn about many of our different growing practices, pick apples to take with you and more.

Children of the Battle: Kids, Cannons & Courage

Learn about the impact of the Battle of Gettysburg on local children who lived through it. Your day includes a historic house tour, interactive museum and a downtown walking tour sharing the stories of battle from the perspective of the children who saw it firsthand.

Children on 1863 The historic Rupp House is home to Children of Gettysburg 1863®, providing young visitors with a hands-on history experience in Gettysburg through the stories of the children, teens and young adults who lived here during and after the Battle of Gettysburg.

Shriver House Museum: (Guided tour) Travel back in time with a guide in period attire as you walk through the Shriver’s’ meticulously restored 1860 home to learn the civilian side of the Battle of Gettysburg. Connect to the past while you listen to the story of George, Hettie, Sadie (7) and Mollie (5) unfold as you move from room to room to appreciate what life was like before, during and after the Civil War.

Gettysburg Town Tour: (Guided tour) A Gettysburg Licensed Town Guide will bring history to life as they take you on a 60-minute walking tour, tell you about Gettysburg’s past and share the civilians’ experiences of the 3-day battle, occupation, aftermath, and Lincoln’s visit.

WWII In Gettysburg: Strength, Service and Sacrifice

Discover the important role that Gettysburg, PA served during WWII and learn about the vital contributions by women to the war effort during this critical time in American history.

This package includes:

Gettysburg Beyond The Battle Museum Adams County Historical Society’s Museum featuring thousands of rare artifacts and the latest technology to explore over three centuries of remarkable stories. The main exhibit – Caught in the Crossfire – invites visitors to step inside a recreated Civil War home and experience the ordeal of Gettysburg’s civilians up close through sights, sounds and special effects.

World War II American Experience: Museum docents will be available for any questions during visit. This Museum has a wide variety of authentic WWII vehicles, uniforms and artifacts in realistic dioramas and exhibits that portray, not just the battlefield, but the home front as well. Learn about Gettysburg’s unique ties to the war. Experience stories of American sacrifice, unity, and might in WWII history. Experience a wide global conflict and some of the towns people from this greatest generation.

WW II in Gettysburg Bus Tour: (1-hour guided tour) See a different side of Gettysburg, with this look at the people and places that played a part in World War II, with an emphasis on the roles women played during WWII.

Civil War Medicine: Hands That Heal

(Junior, Cadette, Senior, Ambassador recommended)

Explore history, science and medicine as medical detectives from the past! Instead of focusing on soldiers and battles, you’re going to discover something just as important: how doctors and nurses saved lives during the Civil War.

This package includes:

Ticket to the Past With the help of virtual reality technology, this attraction gives the unique opportunity to “travel” back to 1863. Find yourself at the center of the bustling station where it served as a hospital, supply lifeline and presidential arrival platform. During your virtual reality experience, you can choose to follow one of the three historical figures featured on a virtual journey to the station during the Battle of Gettysburg and its aftermath.

Seminary Ridge Museum: The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the first battles in which a revolutionary new system, which directly influenced modern emergency care, was employed to evacuate wounded soldiers from the field. Scouts and their families will be encouraged to passively visit museum exhibits with optional scavenger hunts as well as actively engage with museum educators during medical demonstrations and drills, such as first aid (application of tourniquets), triage, transportation (stretcher drills) and more.

George Spangler Farm & Field Hospital: Walk the grounds, hear the stories, and feel the emotions of life–and death–at this historic site forever changed by battle. Living historians and docents provide insight and accounts of experiences on the farm in July 1863.
