Incorporated in 1945 as the Adams County Public Library Association, the current Adams County Library System has seen many changes throughout the decades. From physical location moves from Carlisle to East High to Baltimore Street, from shifting from print to digital resources, and from offering only book loans to offering book clubs, movie events, and technology classes, the ACLS continues its mission and purpose of opening gateways for exploration.
The Gettysburg branch of the ACLS, located at 104 Baltimore Street, occupies the former federal post office and is just one of six branches serving the county. The five other branches Jean Barnett Trone Memorial Library of East Berlin, Carroll Valley Library, Harbaugh-Thomas Library, Littlestown Library, and New Oxford Area Library, in coordination with the Gettysburg branch, offer interlibrary loans, a staple service of the library system. The loan program allows library patrons to borrow any book from any branch with just a simple request.
Other services offered by the Adams County Library System include an e-library with comics and digital magazines, streaming music, history and genealogy, public use of computers and printers, and a Library of Things.
The ACLS also offers programs and events for kids, teens, and adults that encourage creation and collaboration, learning and exploration, and provide access to new technologies.
By “connecting people to opportunities to enrich their lives,” the Adams County Library System remains a valuable asset, resource, and partner in the Adams County community.
